22/02/2009 RW Target week 07: 51. Managed 52. Despite having to start 3 training runs at home while on leave - babysitting and shifting about 3 tons of rubble from up to 3ft below my garden to stabilise the soil before planting - it's been an amazing week. My head says look at the evidence this training is doing for me, but my body constantly reminds me about just how tired I am.
20/02/2009 Club 10K - 11:30 leave home, 12:00 arrive at tip, 12:20 arrive at work. Katy, Lewis (her "not a boyfriend but a boy who is a friend") and Sophie were then given directions from our changing rooms to the park, while I changed. 5 mins to start so I decide to check if the children are OK, but I can't find them at the park! Run back to the start and make it with 30 secs to spare, fortunately seeing them in the park as I dash past. But I still managed a club 10K PB (6:37, 6:37, 7:05, 6:51, 6:51, 6:30, (0.17m 1:01) = 41:35).
18/02/2009 First - and hopefully last 'Paula' moment in training this year. Went out for run after a late meal, guts felt really heavy and I only just made it round the first 6 of a 10 mile run. (I ran a heck of a lot better afterwards though).
17/02/2009 Speedwork today - on my own again! Last week's "measured" 200m (thinking the Runners' World training plan meant 200m not 2 mins up hill after feedback last year) turned out to be 280m. So I tried doing the full 500m (2 mins) that the plan said to do as my penance. Hard work, but then so it should be. I did manage 12x 500m up Hoburne Hill and round to Hoburne Gardens - to just opposite Roy's place (Retired Vicar of Holy Trinity Church, Abergavenny). Each time being a few seconds less than the prescribed 2 mins but each time needing me to stretch and walk that bit more before the next attempt though. And in my defence it was getting more windy and colder as time went on too.
16/02/2009 Sunday's Lytchett 10 result proves that Debbie (Stokewood Injury Clinic) was fixing my calf last week… How could I ever think otherwise! 4M easy today felt good - and spring has really sprung now!
15/02/2009 RW Target week 06: 46.5M. Managed 46.5 I entered Lytchett 10 Mile (not DRRL) race to give another estimate for a marathon target time. (= 10 Mile Personal Best: 1:07:21) :-) This predicts a 3h 25min marathon time, based on a straight ratio of last year's Lytchett and this to last year's marathon time. The 10M PB however gives 3:06:57 to 3:08:38, using different race time predictor formulae. Split times; 6:02, 6:37, 7:13, 6:54, 6:46, 6:39, 7:40, 6:43, 6:22, 6:21 - note the 210 ft climb between miles 6 & 7! Looks like a tough week ahead - lots of hills and mileage now up to >50 miles/week. And it's half-term so I will be childminding and doing lots of gardening from Wednesday too...
13/02/2009 Kept to Runners' World training plan pretty much 100% this week. That's six days on the trot - excuse the pun (moved Saturday's 5 miles easy run to Friday and made it 6.3 miles, otherwise almost spot on). The weather is improving now; signs of spring all around, and feeling good…
10/02/2009 Booked ticket to Marathon Expo at Excel centre on National Express coach - cheap seats were only available from yesterday(?). Matt (my son) has found ASICS 2130GT much cheaper than Up & Running (at Prodirect Running website). Thinking of getting a second pair, except they don't have my size. Saw Debbie (Stokewood Injury Clinic) for my first ever 'injury clinic' visit when I don't actually have an injury. The idea is that a penny spent now translates to a pound saved later. (One day I'll be rich then?) ;-) In fact things hurt much more after the treatment, which I'd have to say felt like a set back rather than a cure. Possibly resetting things to how they should be? We'll see.
08/02/2009 RW Target week 05: 40M. Managed 41.7 Yippee, I actually did this week's target miles. Not for long as Lytchett Ten next Sunday clashes with a Training schedule that says 18M. (Shhh! - Calf seems to be much better). Made lots of Marmalade to sell for Macmillan.
06/02/2009 No run yesterday - working on WIKI and ran out of time. Lots of snow today on the 5M Easy (icy?) - looks like a photographer's dream (rather than mine)! Entered Purbeck 10k and Rotary Easter ¼ Marathon today (both are DRRL).
04/02/2009 Happy birthday Katy! Pity there wasn't enough snow to keep you off school for another day. I think the wind made it feel much colder today though. Squeezed in 8.25 miles but was a bit late back from lunch (work compromising a bit, home life compromised too, and the training was meant to take 72 mins + but done in 58 (and longer) It's the only way to fit it all in.
03/02/2008 5 miles of Fartlek on my own in the snow, hale, high winds,... (with 1M jog each end). Brings me back to reality after yesterday's high… I've not had a single genuine sponsor sign up yet either (hint hint!) But the views across the fields around Burton were great and I think I impressed a passing motorist (except it was only my rolled-up wooly stuffed down the front of my running tights... sorry)!
02/02/2009 Cycled in - through the snow this time - brakes froze up and I was stuck in gear 6. Despite that I managed a 5 Mile recovery jog at lunchtime (also in the snow!) But I didn't care about the snow... my friend Ana emailed me (on Friday) to say that her parents are happy to put me up in Greenwich the night before the race. THANKS JUDY AND RAY! And I also went past the literal "milestone" of completing my first 100 miles in training for this year.
01/02/2009 RW Target week 04: 34M - but only managed 30.3 unless you count cycling as equ. 4M in cross-training. Blackmore Vale Half Marathon today. Unrealistic target set at 3:30, before I realised how hilly this course is. Managed 1:31:31 though - well pleased with that as the calf is holding together.
27/01/2009 Running Club AGM and leave on Friday to prepare for both daughter's parties on Saturday sort of gets in the way of following the RW plan for the next few days. Will finish this week a bit short on miles again.
26/01/2009 Cycled in (7M each way) - but working on Club AGM stuff at lunchtime so missed the chance for an easy pace jog. Probably the cycle ride counts as equivalent to a Recovery run?
25/01/2009 RW Target week 03: 40M - and despite injury fears I managed 39.2M (but less miles would have been better...) Today's plan was for a 13M Slow. The Victa Crew wanted to go further (17M), and we did a bit of a cracking pace at times too. Not sure that was a good idea, for team motivation or injury avoidance. Still, we've got a good distance behind us now which buries a few demons for them. And it pushed my weekly mileage up to a nearly respectable number.
23/01/2009 Decided to push on with Runners’ World training plan, but not to push too hard. Tuesday’s missed (postponed) Speedwork was rather abbreviated today. 6M and only 3 speed reps of not quite a mile. We (James and I) did them at 6:15 pace though. My 'cow' still feels a bit bruised somewhere deep inside. Perhaps I can down-grade it to calf again?
21/01/2009 Gently easing back in to the Runners' World training plan for sub 3:30 So it's 7 miles today, at a slightly quicker pace too (sfsg).
20/01/2009 I was right - She said I shouldn't be running on it! But that was during a telephone chat. It's feeling much better - only a numbness now (internal bruising?) after another 5 miles today. Debbie (Stokewood Injury Clinic) is fantastic - called Saturday for an appointment (Tuesday), called Monday to cancel it, and she's been so helpful. I must book up my monthly sports massage soon.
19/01/2009 Arranged (last night) to see Debbie (Stokewood Injury Clinic) again, but at last things seem to feel like they are improving. Did a gentle 4 miles before she said I shouldn't…
18/01/2009 RW Target week 02: 38M. Actual mileage a big fat ZERO. :-(
17/01/2009 Injury continues to hurt so much I'm still limping. (My calf is now officially a cow). No running at all this week :-(
13/01/2009 Saw Debbie (Stokewood Injury Clinic) who gave Ultrasound treatment on my calf injury. I tried to be brave on the treatment couch during the massage, but failed abysmally. No sign of injury for half an hour afterwards, but agony since! btw It's not the calf muscle - there's a technical term for it: I think it’s the interior muscle hallicis flexor longus, but she reckoned it's the exterior Soleus that's torn. All Greek –Latin? – to me!
12/01/2009 (see 26/12/08) Should have seen Debbie sooner. Calf bad after running last week, and REALLY BAD (had to limp) just walking from car to the Milborne St. Andrew's Race registration. Stretched and rubbed enough to think I'd finish, but almost zero power on right leg whenever going up even the gentlest hill. Still did a good time overall: 71:43 (7:22, 7:10, 7:43, 8:18, 6:55, 6:22, 7:56, 6:31, 6:56, 6:43 =9.77mls 175bpm av, 184 max, av 7:19/ml)
11/01/2009 RW Target week 01: 31M. Managed 29M as I've cut short the Friday Run to ease the calf muscle problems.
09/01/2009 Buy new Trainers today!!! [Bought ASICS 2130GTs, on 09/01/2009]
09/01/2009 Went for a very gentle jog. Ouch again. Stretching made it feel good afterwards but got worse as afternoon progressed. The feel good may only be Ibuprofen related!
09/01/2009 Need to set up regular sports massage with Stokewood Injury Clinic (Debbie 01202 565115 - shameless plug that’s well deserved) once a month.
08/01/2009 Didn't run - right calf is seriously not right. Limping around today. Fingers crossed for Sunday and beyond.
07/01/2009 Ouch! - Suspect the calf muscle mentioned 26/12/08 was much worse than a bad cramp… It must be by now anyway.
07/01/2009 Need to sort out publicity photo [done 13/01/2009 lunchtime with Kris Barnes] and contact Macmillan [done 12/01/2009 by email] / set up JustGiving account/ Web page with Macmillan [done 22/01/2009 via George on the Christchurch Runners website]
06/01/2009 Entered: Milborne 10, Lytchett 10*, Pukka Mad 20, Portland 10, Blackmoor Vale Half. Desperately need to replace the trainers. (* Lytchett not featuring on DRRL this year)
06/01/2009 Need to make enquiries about accommodation for James and me in Greenwich on 25 Apr! [Emailed contacts from work]
06/01/2009 Tried on Trainers in Up and Running (Winton) – I quite like the ASICS, but not the price so much. Right calf still giving me gib on 'test run' in the new shoes.
26/12/2008 Pulled right calf muscle running round my son's paper round (3.75 miles of hills and fartlek in 47 mins 3 sec). Thought I was running on a slight cramp at the time. Also got the flu (poss just a heavy cold) that won't go away. Don't want to use up so many excuses so early!
Sep-Dec’08 Followed Runners’ World 8-week 10K plan as pre-marathon build up. Broke 10K personal best by some margin: 40:56. Looks like a sub 40 min 10K is possible some day.
